Our Approach

The great challenge that the aerospace industry faces, is how to deliver the manifest benefits of flight but in a truly sustainable way, so that more people around the world and future generations may share in them. GKN Aerospace is putting environmental sustainability at the heart of our business, developing technologies that rapidly decarbonise existing aircraft, and innovating to help build a whole new generation of planes producing no emissions at all.

(2) The Group’s chosen intensity ratio is energy consumption, emissions and water withdrawal reported above normalised megawatts usage (MWh), tonnes of CO2e, or m3 per £1,000 of revenue. The data has been standardised from the source units in which it was initially collected. The revenue figures used to calculate the intensity ratio include continuing operations under operational control only.
(4) Where renewable electricity is commercially and reasonably available in the relevant jurisdiction.
(5) Target baselined on FY2021 with consideration of HY2022 performance.

Culture of Sustainability

GKN Aerospace is putting environmental sustainability at the heart of our business, developing technologies that rapidly decarbonise existing aircraft, and innovating to help build a whole new generation of planes producing no emissions at all.

To do so, we are creating a Culture of Sustainability throughout our organisation, stretching our targets and policies every five years with the objective to become a net zero greenhouse gas emissions business before 2050.

Commitment to Net Zero

In order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, our ambition is to achieve net zero GHG emissions in operations by 2050 in line with the UK Government’s target.

As part of this commitment, GKN Aerospace in the Netherlands has been powered by 100% renewable electricity since the 1st January 2021, helping accelerate our Net-Zero journey.

Our Global Technology Centre in Bristol also represents a major commitment to developing the sustainable aerospace technology of the future.

    A Sustainable GKN Aerospace

We have committed to 5 strategic themes which direct how we continually drive to reach our targets and that of our customers, by:

    • Designing products that enable our customers to manufacture aircraft that emit net zero greenhouse gas emissions throughout their life-cycle by 2050.
    • Minimising our impact on the environment, conserving natural resources and eradicating hazardous waste.
    • Making meaningful progress to these longer term targets each year, with interim targets and reviews.
