**Speaker 1** The Fan Case Mount Ring is a flight critical part. It's a large structure that sits at the front of the engine and that holds the engines to the wing. This is for sure a part which is critical for a safe flight. **Speaker 2** The traditional way of making this part is to start with an oversized ring forging, where you machine away roughly 90% of the material. At GKN, we thought we can absolutely make that better and more efficient with this technology. We're saving about 160 kilos on each part, and that's roughly 60 tonnes of titanium every year. And this is just the first step. There's more optimization that can be done with this technology, building even more net shape. Our ultimate goal is to not waste any material. **Speaker 3** With additive manufacturing, we use laser with the titanium wire and build the material up layer by layer. **Speaker 1** This is a technology we have worked on for more than 20 years and we industrialised this technology now for two years ago. We have before introduced additive on much simpler parts, smaller parts, but this was the first time we do that on a flight critical part to this scale. **Speaker 3** In this shop we have all the processes that are required for the Fan Case Mount Ring, of course the additive manufacturing cell, but also the inspection method such as digital X-ray and the hand scanner that actually measures the parts in a couple of minutes. **Speaker 1** So this has really been a great journey when it comes to collaboration, starting from nothing and making it through the line. You can imagine two years ago, we were all here, newbies trying to make something that nobody has done before.
