large commercial aircraft

Applying our expertise in metallics and composite materials, GKN Aerospace designs and manufactures primary and secondary structural components and assemblies for large civil aircraft and engines. Examples include the complete wing trailing edge for the Airbus A380 designed and manufactured by GKN Aerospace using the very latest carbon pre-preg moulding materials. GKN Aerospace also produces the first all-composite fan containment case for the GEnx engine, and is working with Rolls-Royce to provide advanced fan case technologies for the Trent 1000 engine both of which will power the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. GKN Aerospace also leads advances in providing highly efficient electrothermal ice protection systems now selected for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and we are heavily involved in the A350 XWB (Extra Wide Body) long-haul airliner with the delivery of significant work packages spanning the design and production of large-scale composite wing structures.

We provide a range of primary and secondary structural systems for regional aircraft programs. Such as the titanium tailcone manufactured using advanced processes for the Bombardier CRJ700 and CRJ900 and transparency systems for the Bombardier Dash 8 and Embraer. With over 30 years’ experience in turboprop manufacture, GKN Aerospace provides nacelle systems and assemblies to customers such as Bombardier for its Dash 8 regional aircraft series.

GKN Aerospace has a long pedigree in the rotary wing sector providing aerostructures and systems for a number of leading global OEMs. We are a major supplier to United Technologies in the SH-60 Black Hawk and Sea Hawk programs providing significant fuselage composite structures and, rotor blades. We provide the complete airframe assembly for the Super Lynx and the latest generation Future Lynx to AgustaWestland as well as being a major participant in the AW101. Most recently GKN Aerospace has been selected to design and build the composite fuselage for the advanced CH-53K. In addition GKN Aerospace is a leading provider of ice protection systems for the V-22 Osprey engine inlet and AW101 main and tail rotor blades.

UAV

GKN Aerospace’s broad capabilities and experience are being applied in the growing sector of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). We are applying our market-leading skills in developing composite materials and structures to deliver the designing and manufacturing of the composite and metallic structures for the outboard wing and the forward centre fuselage section for Northrop Grumman’s X-47B UCAS-D. We are also developing and producing the all-composite skins which will cover 90 per cent of the X-47B’s surfaces.
