integrated systems

GKN Aerospace is in a unique position, with its advanced manufacturing technology in composites, to provide the opportunity for embedded smart structure capabilities that aid the integration of systems into aerostructure assemblies. This capability extends from conventional power and control system encapsulation into composite structures through to integrated fibre optics with applications ranging from system control, data bus transfer and advanced health monitoring systems. With the advent of all-electric aircraft such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, GKN Aerospace has been able to use a new approach to de-icing based on its electro-thermal technology, that’s more efficient, extends airframe endurance and advances de-icing performance.

The system comprises heater mats embedded within the surface of the composite structure to be protected. An electronic controller constantly assesses the condition of surfaces. As ice starts to build in a particular area, heat can be targeted locally and finely tuned making the system compatible with today’s high- performance critical wing designs. The approach increases the endurance of the airframe and reduces fuel consumption significantly. The product’s simplicity also cuts maintenance tasks to limit aircraft downtimes.

The versatile technology has virtually endless applications across aerostructures, from flight control surfaces to engine and equipment inlets and helicopter blades. It has been selected for a range of major electric ice protection programs including the Joint Strike Fighter’s F135 engine, the wings of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the engine inlet of Boeing’s V-22 Osprey and the main rotor blades and tail rotor blade heater mats for the AgustaWestland AW101 helicopter.
